Types of Elections

Presidential Elections

Elections for president of the United States occur every four years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The next presidential election takes place in November 2024. Americans cast their vote for presidential candidate, and the candidate with the majority of electoral votes wins via the process of the Electoral College.

Congressional Elections & Midterm Elections

Congressional elections determine who represents your state in Congress. They also decide which political party—Democratic or Republican—will hold a majority in each chamber of Congress for the next two years.

  • Occur every 2 years
  • Voters choose one third of senators and every member of the House of Representatives
  • Occur halfway between presidential elections
  • Congressional elections use the popular vote to determine winning candidate
