English as a Second Language (ESL): Databases

About Library Databases

library database is an organized, searchable collection of citations or full-text articles of periodicals (magazines, journals and news sources) or reports as well as images, recordings and videos often related to a specific subject area. Using library databases will help you find reliable information from trusted sources. They all offer some sort of translation tool, mostly within the articles.

How to use Language tools in Databases

Changing your Interface Language:

  • Databases offer the ability to change the language of the search screen.
    • EBSCOhost & Gale databases – Click on the Languages link at the top of the screen and choose the language you prefer.
    • Ebook Central – Click on the Settings link at the top of the screen and select Language.
    • O’Reilly – Click on the Profile icon at the top left of the screen, ,  and select Settings. Here you are able to select your preferred language.

Limiting by Language:

  • Databases also offer a language option on the Advanced Search screen which allows you to search for materials in a language other than English.  Be sure to scroll down on the search screen to locate the Language menu.  This option will search materials available exclusively in the language you prefer and display English-language materials that have been translated to your preferred language.

Translating the full text of an article:

  • Articles in HTML format can be translated from the item screen.  When you see an article with this icon, click on this link.  You will see options for translating the article above the title of the article.
  • Most articles are in .pdf format, shown with the icon , can be translated using Google Translate by selecting the document icon and uploading it.

**Although Nursing Reference Center Plus does not offer translating tools, it has Spanish Patient Education documents available.
