The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is an agency of the United States Department of Labor established in 1970. Its mission is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by establishing and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration agency covers most private sector employers and their workers. Some public sector employers and workers in the 50 states and certain territories and jurisdictions also fall under the federal authority of OSHA. Military, state, and local governments, and tribes, must comply with their own programs meeting equivalent OSHA standards.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program provides workers with basic and advanced training about common safety and health hazards on the job. Outreach training emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
The 10-hour General Industry training program is primarily intended for entry level workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in general industry. The program also provides information regarding workers' rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. Through this training, OSHA helps to ensure that workers are more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights.
OSHA 10-Hour training is a voluntary safety program. Students who successfully complete the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry course receive an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry wallet card as proof of completion.
Why should you get this certificate?
Before engaging in any potentially hazardous activities, workers must receive appropriate safety training from their employer, as defined in OSHA standards. Between FY 2012 and FY 2016, more than 3.94 million workers were trained in job hazard recognition and avoidance through the program.
This training demonstrates you are developing a safety mindset and have learned valuable work skills. At the completion of this training, you will know your rights as a worker, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. The knowledge and skills obtained through this program make a worker more employable with a competitive advantage in the job market.
